Vegetarian Diet Plan

Vegetarian has long been a good alternative to the high fat, high protein diet that plagues the health of so many people. While it isn’t for everyone, going vegetarian can help you achieve a better level of health. Once you learn the basics of the vegetarian diet plan, you can enjoy all the benefits of being a vegetarian.

What is a vegetarian?

A vegetarian is a person who doesn’t eat meat. There are many different categories of vegetarianism which are determined by the level of animal products that a person chooses to eat. An ovo-lacto vegetarian abstains for meat but will eat dairy products and eggs. You can also be an ovo-vegetarian (eggs only) or a lacto-vegetarian (dairy products only). Vegans eat no products from animals at all.

Benefits of vegetarianism

A vegetarian diet has many different benefits for your health. When you become vegetarian you eliminate one of the largest sources of fat. Although meat has a lot of protein, it also contains a lot of fat. You’ll reduce your risk of heart disease and hypertension.

You’ll also have a higher concentration of nutrition in your food. While it’s definitely possible to eat “bad” vegetarian food (like potato chips, cookies and French fries), vegetarianism opens up the doors to trying new kinds of fruits, vegetables and grains. Generally speaking, fruits and vegetables are more nutritionally dense than other types of food and these foods make up a large part of the vegetarian diet.

Since you’ll be eating less fat and increasing the nutrients in you diet, you may naturally lose weight. Studies show that vegetarians are slimmer and less likely to be obese.

How to transition

If you are currently eating a lot of animal products, you may wonder how you’ll ever live without meat. Transitioning to vegetarianism is easier if you take things slow. First, try to eliminate red meat from your diet. While you are doing this, boost the amount of fruits and vegetables in your diet. Try experimenting with fruits and veggies that you may not normally eat to increase the variety of your diet.

Next, begin removing chicken and then fish. Notice the way that your body feels by eliminating these animal products. Learn to use protein substitutes like tofu, tempeh and TVP. These alternatives will further increase the variety of the diet and help you make substitutes of your old favorites, like burgers or tacos.

Vegetarianism is a good choice if you want to improve your health and reduce your waist line. By following these tips you’ll be able to effectively transition from a standard diet to a healthy vegetarian way of life.
